Steelworks History
| 1346 |
Kralodvorske zelezarny Inc. belongs to the
oldest metallurgical companies on the territory
of Czech lands. It links to the hundred-year
tradition of the region, supported by local
voluminous diggings of raw materials and
wood and water sufficiency. Although the
location seems like an age-old advantage, it
still holds true today. The old merchant route
from Prague, via Pilsen, to Bavaria has
transformed into the D5 motorway. The first
ironmongers were operating in the place of the
current factory already in 13th century. A arge
metallurgical plant was established in 1346 by the Czech King and Holy Roman
Emperor Caesar Charles IV, by whom the foundry was probably afterwards called -
Charles' foundry. Some years earlier, the Popovic foundry was established. |
| 1595 |
As time went by, foundries were often changing their owners or tenants. In 1586, the
famous aristocrat family of Lobkovic bought the equity and consequently brought
the entrepreneurial spirit into the steel-making industry of the region. The family of
Lobkovic also called the knight Henry Caspar from Sarth, a reputable French
professional and entrepreneur, who launched the production of ammunition there and
mainly built the first blast furnace in the Czech Republic.
|
| 1860 |
At the end of 16th century, Charles' foundry came under the management of the
Royal chamber manor. The decisive stage of the foundry development began in 1860,
when the ownership changed over to the Füstenberg family. After twenty years, the
last charcoal furnace was demolished and ore was started smelt using coke. Also
extensive reconstruction begun - new modern furnaces were built, iron-foundries with
abyssal tube casting, pattern-shops, locksmith workshops with lathes, smithy and
steam superchargers, a funicular for transportation of limestone form a nearby quarry,
etc.
|
| 1880 |
 The foundry was sold to
Austrian Real Credit Bank in
1880, which in order to
manage all metallurgical
plants established the Czech
montan company. Since that
time, the name Kralodvorske
zelezarny has begun to be
used. Technical development of the plant continued by electrification, the building of
fifteen-ton Siemens-Martin furnaces, Thomas steel-works, two other blast furnaces,
and also an hotel and the hospital. During the last thirty years of the 19th century,
Kralodvorske zelezarny belonged to the high-styled plants in Austria-Hungary. It
became a place of meetings of the most significant authorities and of many technical
inventions. |
| 1909 |
Future development continued also at the beginning of 20th century. By 1905 the thin
plate rolling mill was finished and the production of transformer and dynamo plates
began, the present head office building was, along with water-supply, another flats
for employees etc. Also distribution of iron castings was extended including the art
type. A considerable turning-point occurred in 1909 when the Czech montan
company perished and the new owner became the Prague Iron Corporation.
|
| 1938 |
Development stopped for number of years due to World War I. Reconstruction
began in the between-war period. It is important to mention the launching of band
production in cold rolling mill in 1938.
|
1953 1963 1968 1969 1985 |
All of the companies possessed by Prague Iron Corporation were, together with
Kralodvorske zelezarny, nationalised after World War II. A galvanised metal-coated
strips plant, located in Velky Senov, Ness of Sluknov, joined the organisation
structure of Kralodvorske zelezarny. In 1953 a spun casting foundry was placed in
service, in 1963 production began in the new casting foundry, and in 1968 began the
production of continuos casting of cast-iron profiles. In the next year the cold rolling
mill for stainless steel strips was put into operation, and in the year 1985 the cold
rolling mill for low-carbon steel strips. The traditional production range - pig-iron and
hot rolled sheets - was stopped in the 1980s, gradually restrained and finally in 1994
ended also tube program. It is also appropriate to mention here the contribution of
Kralodvorske zelezarny to the other non-production objects in the region of Kraluv
Dvur and Beroun - the building of houses, a sport stadium, tennis courts,
swimming-pool, summer resorts etc.

1989 1994 |
The latest page of history began in 1989 and 1994 when the state-owned enterprise
Kralodvorske zelezarny was transformed into a corporation. Inner transformation into
a holding type was also finished incorporating: CONTIPROFILE, Ltd., Valcovna za
studena Ltd., Kralodvorske zelezarny Slevarna Ltd., Kralodvorske zelezarny ENERGO
Ltd., Kralodvorske zelezarny MECHANIKA Ltd., Zelezarny Velky Senov Ltd. The
group was recently extended by subsidiaries: Kralodvorske zelezarny Sluzby Ltd.,
SEFO Ltd. and Kerval Ltd.
